Enkele dagen nadat er door de Amerikaanse president Trump is gesproken over een "historische overeenkomst" in de onderhandelingen tussen Hamas en Israël, vallen er in Gaza opnieuw doden. Volgens de Palestijnse gezondheidsautoriteiten gaat het in totaal om zeventien doden, het hoogste aantal op één dag in weken.

Bij luchtaanvallen werden volgens de Palestijnse gezondheidsautoriteiten zeker vier mensen gedood in Deir-al-Balah. Ook werd een stel met hun 9-jarige kind gedood in Mawasi. Een ander stel werd met hun kind gedood in een appartement in Gaza-stad. Daar werden ook twee andere mensen in een tent gedood. Later op de dag vielen er nog meer doden, onder meer in Jabalia, in het noorden van Gaza.

In totaal zijn er sinds het staakt-het-vuren dat vorig jaar oktober inging, zeker 1230 Palestijnen gedood. Israël bezet een steeds groter deel van de Gazastrook, meer dan 60 procent inmiddels. Netanyahu zegt openlijk dat hij nog meer zou willen innemen. De zogeheten 'gele lijn' schuift steeds verder op, vertelden Palestijnen eerder aan de NOS.

Hamas positief

Afgelopen vrijdag kondigde Trump aan dat Hamas de wapens gaat neerleggen. Hij noemde de overeenkomst een belangrijke stap in de uitvoering van het 20-punten-plan dat in september vorig jaar op papier een wapenstilstand betekende tussen Hamas en Israël.

Hamas reageerde positief op de aankondiging van Trump, maar wil niet beginnen aan de ontwapening voordat Israël zich volledig heeft teruggetrokken uit Gaza. Israël wil zich echter niet terugtrekken voordat Hamas volledig ontwapend is. Eerder zei Hamas bereid te zijn zijn politieke tak op te heffen, maar dat is nog niet gebeurd.

Scepsis in Israël

"Onze inschatting is dat, als we onze troepen terugtrekken voordat Hamas daadwerkelijk ontwapend is, de organisatie haar aanwezigheid in heel Gaza snel zal uitbreiden en haar terroristische infrastructuur weer zal opbouwen", zei een woordvoerder van de Israëlische premier Netanyahu hierover tegen persbureau AP. Hij voegde eraan toe dat Hamas dan weer een aanval als die op 7 oktober 2023 zou kunnen uitvoeren.

De Israëlische minister van Energie en Infractructuur, Cohen, zegt dat het kabinet de overeenkomst nog moet gaan bespreken, schrijft de Times of Israël. Ook zei hij dat Israël zal doorgaan met de aanvallen. Anonieme hooggeplaatste functionarissen hebben in Israëlische media al wel gezegd dat Israël niet tevreden is met het plan. Premier Netanyahu zelf heeft niet publiekelijk gereageerd op Trumps aankondiging.

In het noordwesten van Pakistan zijn zeker veertien doden gevallen door een zelfmoordaanslag. Het vermoedelijke doelwit was een demonstratie bij een politiebureau. De betoging was gericht tegen militanten en de autoriteiten, die volgens de betogers te weinig doen tegen terrorisme in de regio.

Op het moment van de aanlag waren er honderden demonstranten aanwezig, schrijft de Pakistaanse krant Dawn. Tientallen mensen zijn gewond geraakt. Minstens negen burgers en vijf agenten zijn omgekomen, zegt een politiechef tegen persbureau Reuters. De verantwoordelijkheid is nog niet opgeëist.

De ontploffing was bij de ingang van het politiebureau in Kabal, in de Swatvallei. Militanten pleegden daar de afgelopen maanden veelvuldig aanslagen. De Swatvallei stond zo'n twintig jaar geleden onder controle van de lokale taliban, de Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Het leger verdreef de militanten, maar de TTP probeert nog steeds om terug te keren.

'Niet nog een generatie weduwen'

De demonstranten willen dat er vrede komt. Vanaf een podium eisten sprekers in Kabal dat de orde terugkeert in de Swatvallei. "We hebben jaren van bloedvergieten meegemaakt. Onze moeders, zusters en dochters hebben immens geleden en we willen niet dat er nog een generatie van weduwen en wezen moet opgroeien", zei een van hen volgens de krant.

President Asif Ali Zardari heeft zijn medeleven betuigd aan de slachtoffers van de aanslag en hun naasten. Hij riep op tot een grondig onderzoek. De president zei ook dat de daders zullen worden gestraft.

Bijna 3000 doden

Dit jaar zijn volgens de Pakistaanse overheid ruim 800 Pakistanen bij aanslagen gedood. Dat aantal omvat burgers, militairen en agenten. In dezelfde periode zouden ruim 2000 militanten zijn gedood.

Pakistan beschuldigt buurland Afghanistan, waar de Taliban aan de macht is, ervan dat het samenwerkt met de TTP. Vanuit Kabul worden deze beschuldigingen weersproken. De twee landen hebben in twee jaar tijd meerdere keren bombardementen en beschietingen op elkaar uitgevoerd.

Na de ongekende overtocht van migranten vanuit Marokko naar de Spaanse exclave Ceuta lijkt de rust bij de grensovergang teruggekeerd, maar tientallen families zijn er wanhopig op zoek naar hun geliefden. Onder de vermisten zijn veel minderjarigen. Achraf Maymoun van mensenrechtenorganisatie AMDH heeft contact met een aantal families. "Er is op dit moment geen enkele organisatie die hierover nieuws verschaft. Niet in Spanje en ook niet in Marokko," zegt hij.

Deze week staken tienduizenden mensen de grens over. De sporen ervan zijn nog duidelijk te zien. Terwijl toeristen en Marokkanen met een speciaal visum op hun gemak het grenscomplex bij Ceuta binnenlopen, zijn op de achtergrond schepen van de Spaanse kustwacht te zien. Aan hen de taak om de lichamen van verdronken migranten uit de idyllisch ogende baai te halen.

Een ander teken van de totale ineenstorting van de grensbewaking is een gapend gat in het grenshek naast de toegangspoort naar Ceuta. Hier worden sporadisch groepjes migranten weer terug op Marokkaanse bodem gezet. Ze treffen meteen bezorgde mensen die zich bij de grens hebben verzameld: ouders, broers en zussen die hopen een bekend gezicht te zien of in ieder geval op iemand die ze kan vertellen of hun dierbaren nog in leven zijn.

De 60-jarige Mohammed uit Bouznika is één van de bezorgde familieleden. In zijn handen heeft hij het paspoort en een pasfoto van zijn 21-jarige zoon Younes. Terwijl hij zijn verhaal wil vertellen, barst hij in huilen uit. "Hij had hier helemaal niet moeten zijn. Hij was pasgetrouwd en net aan zijn leven begonnen", zegt Mohammed.

Hij vertelt dat zijn zoon met een groep vrienden vanuit hun woonplaats Bouznika, een dorp tussen Rabat en Casablanca, naar Ceuta was vertrokken. "Zijn vrienden hebben mij verteld dat ze hem tijdens de zwemtocht achter moesten laten in zee," zegt Mohammed. Hij is ervan overtuigd dat zijn zoon het niet heeft overleefd.

Sociale media

Oproepen op sociale media speelden een belangrijke rol bij de grote toestroom van mensen naar de grens met Ceuta; nu vervullen ze voor de families een andere rol. Zo zijn er op Instagram pagina's aangemaakt met oproepen van Marokkanen die hopen op een teken van leven.

Uit navraag bij de familieleden die zich bij de grens hebben verzameld, valt op dat Marokkanen uit het hele land de oversteek hebben gewaagd. Een bezorgde moeder uit Errachidia, een stad in het oosten van Marokko, wacht wanhopig op nieuws over haar 11-jarige zoon.

"Mijn zoon was niet alleen, hij was meegegaan met mijn zus. Zij wil per se in Ceuta blijven en verstopt zich daar ergens. Ik kan niet met haar in contact komen en ik weet dus ook niet waar mijn jongen is. Ik wil dat hij naar huis komt," vertelt de vrouw.

Soms ook vreugde

Het officiële dodental is inmiddels gestegen naar 72. De zoekacties van de Spaanse kustwacht zijn nog altijd gaande en het is waarschijnlijk dat dit aantal nog oploopt.

Het merendeel van de mensen die de afgelopen dagen de Spaanse exclave binnenkwam, is inmiddels weer terug in Marokko. Hoeveel van hen er nog wel in en rond het Spaanse stadje verblijven, is niet bekend. Een deel van hen zit in de opvangcentra van de exclave. Anderen houden zich inderdaad verstopt, voornamelijk in het bosgebied dat naast het stadje ligt.

Soms is er bij de grens reden tot vreugde en opluchting. Een vrouw in een blauwe jurk begint luidkeels te gillen als ze haar 14-jarige zoon vanachter het hekwerk ziet verschijnen. Al zoenend en knuffelend duwt ze hem in een van de vele taxi's die zoals gebruikelijk aan de Marokkaanse kant van de grenspost staan te wachten

Een van de twee verdachten van de bekladding van het Nationaal Monument op de Dam in Amsterdam blijft vastzitten. De ander wordt vrijgelaten, maar blijft wel verdachte, zegt de politie.

Het monument werd vanochtend rond 05.15 uur beklad met gele en blauwe graffiti. Er waren teksten en een doodshoofd op het monument gekalkt.

De politie hield vanochtend een 27-jarige man uit Hoofddorp aan. Hij werd op heterdaad betrapt. Later werd ook een 39-jarige man uit Polen aangehouden die met lippenstift op de achterzijde van het monument aan het schrijven was. Het is niet bekendgemaakt wie van de twee blijft vastzitten.

Het monument is vanochtend schoongemaakt. Inmiddels zijn de bekladdingen verdwenen.

Burgemeester Halsema van Amsterdam sprak op Instagram haar afschuw uit over de bekladding. "Het is afschuwelijk dat het monument op de Dam opnieuw doelwit is van vandalisme. Goed werk van de politie, waardoor er direct verdachten zijn aangehouden."

Eerdere bekladdingen

Het monument werd dit jaar op de dag van de Dodenherdenking ook al beklad. Toen werd het woord 'genocide' op het monument gespoten.

Vorig jaar gebeurde het ook. De rechter noemde de bekladding "maatschappelijk onacceptabel en disproportioneel". De 25-jarige man die het toen had gedaan, kreeg geen straf of maatregel opgelegd. Wel moest hij de gemeente betalen voor de veroorzaakte schade.

In het Nationaal Holocaustmuseum in Amsterdam is de vervolging van de Roma en Sinti tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog herdacht. In het museum werden toespraken gehouden en bloemen gelegd, en er was een minuut stilte ter nagedachtenis aan de slachtoffers.

Lange tijd was er weinig erkenning voor het lot van de Roma en Sinti tijdens de Holocaust. In 2015 werd 2 augustus uitgeroepen tot herdenkingsdag in Europa.

Die datum is voor Roma en Sinti geen willekeurige datum, legde Kole Pavlov van de Nederlandse Roma Vereniging uit in zijn toespraak. Op die dag in 1944 werden de Roma en Sinti in het concentratiekamp Auschwitz naar de gaskamers gebracht. Ruim 4000 mannen, vrouwen en kinderen werden die dag gedood.

Massamoord

In heel Europa kwamen er tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog naar schatting zo'n 500.000 Roma en Sinti om door massamoord, experimenten en vergassing. De nazi's zagen hen net als de Joden als bedreiging voor het Arische ras. Al voor de oorlog kregen Roma met verregaande beperkingen te maken in Duitsland.

In Nederland werden Roma en Sinti in de jaren 20 en 30 geregistreerd. In totaal woonden er zo'n 4500 in Nederland. Meer dan 200 van hen kwamen om in vernietigingskampen.

"Vandaag herdenken we de slachtoffers en staan we stil bij de families die werden weggevoerd, bij namen die niet zijn teruggevonden en bij verhalen die in stilte zijn doorgegeven of juist zijn verdwenen", zei Pavlov. Hij riep de aanwezigen op stil te staan bij hoe dit leed nog altijd doorwerkt in de huidige generaties.

Bij een botsing tussen twee blushelikopters in Griekenland zijn twee doden gevallen. Het gaat om een Deense piloot en een Griekse coördinator van de brandweer. Zij zaten in de helikopter die na de botsing is neergestort, melden de Griekse autoriteiten.

De twee helikopters waren opgestegen om ten westen van Athene water uit te gooien boven de bosbranden. In de lucht raakten ze elkaar.

Op beelden van de Griekse publieke omroep ERT is te zien dat één van de helikopters in brand vliegt en neerstort:

De Griekse brandweer meldt dat er in totaal vier mannen aan boord waren van de twee helikopters. De andere helikopter vloog na het ongeluk weg. De piloot zou na de botsing contact hebben opgenomen met de brandweer. Hoe en waar die heli aan de grond is gekomen, is niet duidelijk.

Reddingswerkers vonden de twee inzittenden van de neergestorte heli al snel. Ze werden beiden bewusteloos aangetroffen en zijn naar een ziekenhuis vervoerd. Waarschijnlijk zijn ze daar aan hun verwondingen overleden.

Britse piloot

Beide helikopters hadden een buitenlandse piloot en een Griekse coördinator aan boord die contact hield met de brandweer op de grond, schrijft de Griekse publieke omroep ERT. De piloot in de andere helikopter zou een Brit zijn geweest. Het gaat om helikopters die door de brandweer zijn gehuurd om het vuur te bestrijden.

Hoe het kwam dat de helikopters elkaar in de lucht raakten, wordt onderzocht. Buitenlandse brandweer- en helikopterteams worden vaak in de zomer naar Griekenland gestuurd om te helpen bij het bestrijden van bosbranden.

De Italiaanse strijdkrachten hebben vanmorgen een inspectie uitgevoerd op een olietanker op de Middellandse Zee. Per helikopter gingen militairen aan boord van de Toa Payoh, die op de EU-sanctielijst staat als schip uit de Russische schaduwvloot.

De Italiaanse minister van Defensie heeft dat bekendgemaakt. Uit zijn verklaring wordt niet duidelijk of er opvarenden zijn gearresteerd. De missie was bedoeld om de nationaliteit en vlaggenregistratie van de tanker te controleren. De verzamelde informatie wordt nog geanalyseerd, aldus minister Crosetto.

"Ik wil de bemanning van marineschip Thaon di Revel en alle bij de operatie betrokken militairen bedanken", citeert persbureau Ansa de minister. De Italiaanse marine kreeg hulp van een Grieks marineschip en een vliegtuig van de Poolse strijdkrachten.

Kapitein weigerde

De operatie duurde twee uur en is volgens de Italiaanse minister succesvol volbracht. Het resultaat van de actie is nog onduidelijk. Ook de Fransen en Britten hebben de afgelopen tijd schepen van de Russische schaduwvloot geënterd, toen werden de schepen in beslag genomen.

De kapitein van de Toa Payoh zou niet hebben meegewerkt met de Italiaanse marine. Het schip vaart onder de vlag van Kameroen en was onderweg van Benin naar Turkije. De onderschepping gebeurde tussen het Tunesische vasteland en het Italiaanse eiland Pantelleria.

Volgens Italië vond de operatie plaats in internationale wateren. De minister zegt dat de militairen zich hebben gehouden aan internationale regels. Vanuit Moskou zijn de onderscheppingen van de tankers tot nu toe altijd afgedaan als illegaal en zelfs als piraterij.

Wetten aangepast

Wereldwijd zijn honderden schepen door de EU bestempeld als onderdeel van de Russische schaduwvloot. Het Kremlin gebruikt veelal verouderde schepen om sancties te omzeilen. Mede dankzij de schaduwvloot kan Rusland zijn invasie van Oekraïne voortzetten.

Het afgelopen jaar is een aantal Europese landen opgetreden tegen de schepen. Onder meer Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk hebben hun wetgeving aangepast om de schepen te kunnen onderscheppen als het vermoeden bestaat dat ze onder een valse vlag varen.

De Nederlandse marine heeft voor zover bekend nog geen schepen van de Russische schaduwvloot onderschept. Het kabinet wil de wet aanpassen om optreden tegen deze schepen makkelijker te maken. De wijziging van de Wet buitenlandse schepen is vorige maand voor spoedadvies naar de Raad van State gestuurd.

In België is een meterslang spandoek op een gebouw langs de E40 in het Oost-Vlaamse Drongen bij Gent door de politie verwijderd. Het doek, met daarop de tekst 'alle bruine mannen naar achteren', lijkt een reactie op uitspraken die artiest Sophie Straat onlangs deed.

Hoelang het doek er heeft gehangen, is niet duidelijk. Khalid Benhaddou, diversiteitsexpert aan de Universiteit Gent, kaartte de situatie aan op sociale media. Hij zegt dat hij foto's kreeg toegestuurd van een vriend en dat het doek er al dagen hing.

Waarnemend burgemeester Hafsa El-Bazioui van Gent zegt dat ze na het zien van de beelden direct contact heeft opgenomen met de projectontwikkelaar. "Die schrok ervan, want de werf ligt stil tijdens het bouwverlof", vertelt ze in de Vlaamse krant Het Laatste Nieuws.

Benhaddou noemt de boodschap racistisch. "Dit is gewoon racisme, punt. Een metersbreed racistisch spandoek hang je bovendien niet alleen op. Zo'n boodschap hoort niet thuis in onze samenleving."

'Witte mannen naar achteren'

Het spandoek is vermoedelijk een verwijzing naar uitlatingen van Sophie Straat op festivals. De artiest kreeg in juni een stortvloed aan kritiek over zich heen toen ze aan het einde van haar optreden op het festival Best Kept Secret riep dat "witte mannen naar achteren" moesten. Ze deed die oproep bij de aankondiging van een moshpit.

Straat zei daarna dat ze niemand wilde uitsluiten, maar juist ruimte wilde maken voor vrouwen, queer personen en mensen van kleur, die zich in een moshpit volgens haar minder veilig voelen. In een Instagram-bericht vertelde ze daarna te maken te hebben met "een golf aan seksistische, antisemitische haatberichten en (doods)bedreigingen".

Tijdens een optreden op de Gentse Feesten herhaalde ze de uitspraak. "Er is nooit tijd voor nuance", zei Straat in Gent. "We zijn al lang overtijd voor nuance. Alle witte mannen naar achteren! Het is tijd voor de girls, the queers, people of colour. Alle witte mannen naar achteren, witte mannen naar achteren!"

Diversiteitsexpert Benhaddou heeft eerder kritiek geuit op de uitlatingen van Straat. "Ze zoekt het raciale op. Ik vind dat iets tribaals en dat leidt ons naar een heel duister pad van destructieve polarisatie", zei hij eind juli tegen de Vlaamse omroep VRT. Hij noemde het munitie voor extreemrechts.

Het spandoek in Gent, dat Benhaddou fel veroordeelt, laat volgens hem tegelijkertijd zien hoe gevaarlijk identiteitspolitiek kan worden. "Zodra we mensen herleiden tot hun huidskleur of afkomst, wordt de stap naar slogans als deze bijzonder klein. Vandaag treft het de ene groep, morgen de andere. Je mag mensen nooit herleiden tot hun huidskleur of afkomst."

Niet discriminerend

Nederlandse discriminatiemeldpunten concludeerden dat de uitspraken van Straat niet discriminerend waren. "De oproep had alleen betrekking op één korte, eenmalige moshpit voor deze groepen. Bezoekers werden dus niet van het concert geweigerd", zei de organisatie eerder.

Het Belgische gelijkekansencentrum Unia ontving honderden meldingen na het optreden van de Nederlandse artiest op de Gentse Feesten. De organisatie zegt te begrijpen dat "sommige mensen deze uitspraken als kwetsend, stigmatiserend of polariserend ervaren".

Unia wijst erop dat Straat de uitspraak deed aan het einde van een artistiek optreden met een maatschappelijke en politieke boodschap, bedoeld om structurele ongelijkheden aan de kaak te stellen. Artistieke en politieke uitingen vallen volgens het centrum onder de ruime bescherming van de vrijheid van meningsuiting, ook wanneer ze provoceren, choqueren of kwetsen.

De uitspraak moet volgens Unia in die context worden gezien als "een symbolische en artistieke uiting". Het centrum benadrukt dat zijn analyses en adviezen niet bindend zijn en dat alleen een rechter definitief over de kwestie kan oordelen.

Een Nederlandse automobilist is in de Belgische badplaats Blankenberge vast komen te zitten op een trap. De man van 74 volgde zijn navigatie-app om zijn weg door het centrum te vinden, maar die stuurde hem via de stenen trap in de Kerkstraat.

De bestuurder was niet onder invloed van drank of drugs, zegt de lokale politiecommissaris tegen de Vlaamse omroep VRT. "Hij was gewoon verstrooid."

De auto van de toerist moest worden weggetakeld. Hoe groot de schade aan de trap is, wordt nog vastgesteld. De beeldbepalende trap wordt momenteel voor 660.000 euro gerestaureerd en zou in september klaar moeten zijn.

Het vrij zonnige en warme zomerweer van de afgelopen tijd krijgt morgen een tropisch vervolg. Vanaf morgen geldt in het hele land het Nationaal Hitteplan van het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM).

Het RIVM adviseert met name ouderen en kwetsbaren voldoende te drinken, de woning koel te houden en weinig te ondernemen tussen 12.00 en 18.00. Het hitteplan geldt in het zuidoosten van het land al vanaf vandaag.

Komende nacht koelt het nog af naar iets onder de 20 graden, al kan dat in stedelijk gebied minder het geval zijn. Morgenmiddag is het in vrijwel het hele land tropisch warm. Het wordt 30 tot 35 graden, waarbij het in het zuiden van het land het warmst is. Op de Wadden is het misschien net geen 30 graden.

De zon schijnt flink met wat sluierwolken, in de middag kan er ook een stapelwolk ontstaan en in de avond is een lokaal warmteonweer in het zuidoosten van het land niet geheel uitgesloten.

Klam en benauwd

De nacht naar dinsdag verloopt erg warm. In de steden zakt het kwik niet onder de 23 graden, in open gebied blijft het ook vaak 20 graden.

Dinsdag wordt het dan weer tropisch: 30 tot 32 graden. Dat lijkt een fractie minder warm dan maandag, maar door een hogere luchtvochtigheid voelt het klam en benauwd aan. In de loop van de dag ontstaan enkele onweersbuien, met name in het oosten van het land.

Vanaf woensdag gaat de temperatuur duidelijk omlaag. Woensdag is het nog 26 graden, donderdag 23 en vrijdag 22. Daarmee zitten we eindelijk dicht in de buurt van het langjarig gemiddelde voor deze periode in augustus. Het weerbeeld is op een enkele bui na droog en de zon komt nog geregeld tevoorschijn.

In Italië is een 13-jarige jongen overleden die door het eten van kaas gemaakt van ongepasteuriseerde melk negen jaar in coma heeft gelegen. De vader van Mattia Maestri heeft dat bekendgemaakt. De kwestie heeft in Italië tot een jarenlange rechtszaak geleid die werd uitgevochten tot in de hoogste rechtbank.

"Onze Mattia heeft ons verlaten", wordt vader Giovanni Battista Maestri geciteerd door de Italiaanse krant Il T. Hij had het zuivelbedrijf aangeklaagd voor wat er met zijn zoon was gebeurd. De vader had ook een consumentenbond opgericht om mensen te waarschuwen voor het potentiële gevaar van sommige producten.

Epileptische aanvallen

In 2017 at kleuter Mattia een stukje Due Laghi, een zogeheten rauwmelkse kaas, die niet zoals reguliere kazen is gepasteuriseerd. De jongen werd onwel en vervolgens opgenomen in het ziekenhuis van Trento. Hij kampte dagelijks met zware epileptische aanvallen, ook al verkeerde hij in vegetatieve toestand.

De boosdoener bleek een darmbacterie in de kaas. Die waren via mest in de leidingen van het zuivelbedrijf in het product terechtgekomen.

Uiteindelijk oordeelde het Hof van Cassatie, de hoogste rechter, dat er een causaal verband was tussen de aandoening van de jongen en het eten van de Due Laghi. De veroordeling van twee managers van het zuivelbedrijf wegens nalatigheid bleef overeind.

In de Belgische kustplaats Knokke-Heist helpen Nederlandse agenten hun Belgische collega's om overlast door vakantievierende Nederlandse jongeren te voorkomen. Volgens beide korpsen leidt de samenwerking tot minder vechtpartijen en andere incidenten.

Knokke-Heist trekt in de zomermaanden al generaties lang jongeren uit onder andere Noord-Holland en het Gooi. In de badplaats mogen zij vanaf hun zestiende legaal alcohol drinken.

De afgelopen jaren veroorzaakten de vele duizenden bezoekers geregeld overlast. In 2020 was het meerdere nachten op rij onrustig, omdat cafés eerder sloten vanwege de coronamaatregelen.

Goede samenwerking

Sindsdien werken de Nederlandse en Belgische politie samen, deze zomer voor het zesde jaar op rij. De Belgische politie krijgt hulp van Nederlandse agenten te paard en van jeugdagent Maureen Wildvank uit het Gooi, schrijft de regionale omroep NH.

Volgens Wildvank werkt de Nederlandse aanpak proactiever. Waar de Belgische politie pas in actie komt als een situatie escaleert, spreken Nederlandse agenten jongeren vroegtijdig aan om escalatie te voorkomen. "Wij lopen door de menigte, gaan de terrassen op en zoeken contact met de uitbater", zegt ze.

De Belgische politie is blij met Wildvank. "Ze herkennen in haar iemand uit hun eigen omgeving", zegt politie-inspecteur Sophie Rotsaert. Wildvank kan bovendien snel ouders van Nederlandse jongeren inschakelen als hun kinderen over de schreef gaan.

Internationale bijstand

De Nederlandse inzet roept ook vragen op, omdat beide landen kampen met een agententekort. Volgens Wildvank is internationale bijstand echter normaal. "In heel Europa wordt bijstand verleend. Denk aan de Formule 1 of vakantiebestemmingen zoals Split. Ook agenten uit andere landen helpen elkaar. Het hoort erbij en we doen het graag", zegt ze.

Ook in België staat de politiecapaciteit onder druk. "Ook bij ons zijn er nauwelijks genoeg agenten. Daarom zijn we extra dankbaar dat de Nederlandse politie hierheen kan komen", zegt de Belgische hoofdcommissaris Marjolein Lippens.

Volgens beide politiekorpsen laat de samenwerking inmiddels duidelijk resultaat zien. Er zijn minder vechtpartijen, minder openbare dronkenschap en minder vernielingen dan voorheen.

Bij een huis in Assen heeft vannacht opnieuw een explosie plaatsgevonden. Het is al de derde ontploffing in een week bij deze woning aan de Entingestraat. De politie Drenthe vermoedt een verband met twee andere explosies die recent in Assen plaatsvonden.

In acht dagen tijd vonden in Assen vijf explosies plaats op verschillende plekken, twee aan de Klaverstraat en dus drie aan de Entingestraat. Alle ontploffingen waren 's nachts. De twee straten liggen enkele kilometers van elkaar verwijderd.

Naar aanleiding van de golf explosies besloot de politie camera's te plaatsen en extra te surveilleren. Vannacht vond toch weer een explosie plaats, ditmaal aan de achterkant van de woning aan de Entingestraat, De camera's staan volgens persbureau ANP aan de voorzijde van de woning.

De politie vraagt getuigen om zich te melden en vermoedt dat de incidenten met elkaar in verband staan. Buurtbewoners zeggen tegen RTV Drenthe dat kort na de explosie iemand weg is gerend. Er zijn nog geen aanhoudingen verricht.

In Zwolle is vannacht een stapel afval in brand gevlogen, recht voor een flat. De brand sloeg al snel over op een flatwoning op de begane grond. Vervolgens moesten zestien appartementen worden ontruimd.

Meerdere appartementen zijn zwaar beschadigd en onbewoonbaar. Sommige bewoners die vannacht naar buiten moesten, kunnen wel weer terug naar huis. Wanneer dat kan, is niet duidelijk.

De politie doet onderzoek naar mogelijke brandstichting bij het pand. "Vooralsnog kan brandstichting niet worden uitgesloten", zegt de politie. "Maar ook wordt er vanzelfsprekend gekeken naar andere scenario's."

Volgens een woordvoerder van de Veiligheidsregio IJsselland woonde in het appartement waar de buitenbrand naar oversloeg een hamsteraar. "De begane grond lag van de vloer tot het plafond eigenlijk helemaal vol met van alles en nog wat. Het was afgeladen vol." Daardoor kon de brand snel groter worden. "Hoe meer brandbaar materiaal, hoe sneller het vuur zich ontwikkelt natuurlijk", aldus de woordvoerder.

De werkzaamheden aan de Monicabrug in Utrecht zijn vandaag begonnen. De brug tussen de Sint Jacobsstraat en de Oudenoord krijgt een flinke opknapbeurt. Al het verkeer moet daardoor omrijden.

Versie 13.02 van SystemRescue is uitgekomen. SystemRescue is een zelfstartende Linux-omgeving voor het beheren of repareren van een systeem en gegevens na een crash. Het is bedoeld om op een eenvoudige manier admintaken uit te voeren, zoals het maken en bewerken van de hardeschijfpartities. Het wordt geleverd met diverse programma's zoals GParted, fsarchiver, bestandssysteemtools, editors, Midnight Commander en netwerktools. De Steam Deck OLED kan binnenkort games met hdr streamen via Remote Play. Valve voegt die optie toe in een nieuwe bèta. De bèta bevat ook experimentele ondersteuning voor de AV1-codec. Die zorgt bij een lage bitrate voor gestreamde beelden van betere kwaliteit.

Valve just published the Steam Survey results for July 2026, reports Phoronix, "and they point to a small uptick in Linux gaming use." Back in March Steam on Linux hit a record high of 5.33%, dropped to 4.52% in April, landed at 3.99% in May, and then in June was at 3.69%. The just-published numbers for July put Steam on Linux use at 4.01%, as an improvement over the prior two months but still well off the percentage highs of March and April... The July data puts SteamOS Holo as powering around 22% of Steam on Linux gaming systems. That's also with the Steam Machine now shipping, in addition to the Steam Deck.

"When a group of teenagers set out to hike British Columbia's famed Howe Sound Crest Trail in early July, Google Maps suggested the trek would take about five hours," reports SFGate. "Instead, the hike stretched deep into the night, leaving the group exhausted, dehydrated, injured and in need of a helicopter rescue..." Although the approximately 18-mile route with a 6,000-foot elevation gain can be completed by experienced trail runners in a day, search and rescue officials generally recommend hikers treat it as a two-day backpacking trip. The teenagers, all 17 years old, believed Google Maps' estimate that the route would take about five hours. The printed directions they were carrying, which were shared publicly by Lions Bay Search and Rescue, gave simple instructions for two legs of the trail, but didn't account for the terrain or elevation. "[Google Maps] is calculating the time that you're walking a straight road on pavement," [said Maria Masiar, training officer and search manager with Lions Bay Search and Rescue]. "When you get into outdoor terrain, that no longer holds true." Expecting only a short outing, each hiker carried about half a liter of water and limited food. There are no reliable water sources along the trail, meaning hikers must carry enough supplies for the entire route. As the group climbed, they began suffering from dehydration and muscle cramps but continued onward despite falling dramatically behind schedule. Eventually, the group made the decision to turn back and abandon making it to the end of the trail — and as the sun began to set and the group started to descend, fatigue took its toll. According to Masiar, members of the group had already stumbled and fallen several times while trying to race the coming dark, and only one hiker had a headlamp. Eventually, another hiker slipped about 10 feet off a boulder, injuring his tailbone badly enough that he could no longer continue. Search and rescue crews responded, ultimately evacuating him by helicopter.

"A major scientific review is challenging the idea that more protein is always better," reports ABC News: The review, led by pathologist and biomedical researcher Dudley Lamming and published in the journal Cell Press Blue, examined more than 350 studies involving humans, mice, insects, yeast, and other organisms. The review found that eating less protein, or less of certain amino acids that make up protein, may turn on body processes linked to healthier aging, as well as metabolism, the process by which the body turns food and drinks into energy... For adults who already get enough, eating more protein may offer little benefit, while some research suggests that eating less protein could support healthier aging... Lamming reviewed the effect of reducing protein in many body processes. One of the processes involves a hormone called FGF21. "There's an increase in a hormone called FGF21 that promotes energy expenditure [when protein intake is reduced]," Lamming said. "It essentially increases thermogenesis in your adipose tissue, so you don't just store fat, but actually burn it as fuel." This may help explain why some studies connect lower-protein diets with less body fat, better blood sugar control and a healthier metabolism. Eating less protein may also affect signals that tell cells when to grow, repair damage or recycle old cell parts. These jobs may play a role in aging. However, protein restriction is not the same as protein deficiency. The goal is not to deprive the body of an essential nutrient. Instead, the research raises the possibility that avoiding unnecessary excess could benefit some people who already consume enough... Before reaching for another high-protein product, a better question may be: How much protein does my body actually need?

"Scientists say they have detected promising signs that a planet orbiting a star 49 light-years from Earth could have an atmosphere," reports CNN, "making it potentially suitable for life." Called LHS 1140b, the object is about five times the mass of our planet, or a "super-Earth." This planet orbits around its star in the "Goldilocks zone," also known as the habitable zone, meaning its surface temperature is not too hot or too cold for liquid water to exist... "It appears to be consistent with Earth, meaning it might have an iron core and a silicate mantle, plus some sort of low-density component, which is probably a combination of water and, now we know, an atmosphere," [said Collin Cherubim, a planetary scientist and lead author of a paper on the finding, published July 16 in the journal Science]... If further observations confirm the findings, LHS 1140b would mark the first discovery of an atmosphere on a rocky planet in the habitable zone of another star... There is no evidence of life or a life-supporting atmosphere on LHS 1140b now, but Cherubim said he believes it's a formidable candidate for potential signatures of extraterrestrial life. "I think it's the best place to look for life outside the solar system at this point," he said. "It's mostly rocky, it's at the right temperature to support liquid water on the surface, and it has an atmosphere — those are the three key ingredients we look for..." Confirming the existence of an atmosphere on a rocky planet orbiting a red dwarf would be particularly exciting, Cherubim said, because the possibility of that happening is an open question in astronomy. "Can rocky planets have atmospheres around red dwarfs? This is the first bona fide yes," he said. "It's kind of a sigh of relief for a lot of us. But the jury's still out. Maybe this is a weird planet, and it's an oddball, or maybe it's the first of many. We don't know yet." Now "The James Webb Space Telescope is going to look at it," Cherubim told CNN, and "Hubble's going to look at it. Basically, everybody who can see it is going to be training their eyes on it." Michaël Gillon, research director of the Astrobiology Research Unit at Belgium's University of Liège warned CNN that no definitive proof exists that LHS 1140b possesses a substantial atmosphere. But if the detection of helium can be confirmed, the implications would be profound. "Until now, we had only limited evidence for atmospheres on temperate rocky exoplanets. Demonstrating that LHS 1140 b has retained a substantial atmosphere over billions of years would show that at least some habitable zone Super-Earths around red dwarfs can survive the intense early activity of their host stars."

The blog Linuxiac reports: Linux has crossed a major milestone in North America, with the open-source operating system now accounting for 10.65% of desktop usage in the region, according to Statcounter's latest figures for July 2026. The result places Linux firmly in double-digit territory for the first time in Statcounter's North American desktop operating system statistics. For comparison, Statcounter recorded Linux at 5.52% in June 2026, so the share nearly doubled in one month... However, the sharp monthly increase needs context. Statcounter's June figures included an "Unknown" category that accounted for 9.24% of North American desktop usage. Its reduction seems to have coincided with Linux's rise, possibly indicating better identification of previously unclassified traffic... Statcounter is not the only major web measurement platform showing Linux with a substantial presence on North American desktops. Cloudflare Radar data, filtered to desktop HTTP traffic from North America over the previous 28 days, also places Linux at a notably high level [9.4%]. StatCounter's data also shows Linux with an even larger market share of 11.87% in just the United States — and a 14.73% market share in India. Linux's market share in other world regions: Asia 7.17% Africa 5.71% Europe 5.49% South America 4.35% China 2.12% And here's how the Linux market share on other countries compare to India and the U.S. India 14.73% United States 11.87% Germany 7.24% UK 6.18% Canada 3.83% Australia 3.55% Linux's surge could be due to its use in automation or headless browser workloads, Linuxiac points out. But another possibility is "growing frustration with Windows hardware requirements, advertising, account integration, telemetry, and forced interface changes has pushed some users to explore alternatives..." "For now, the safest conclusion is that Linux has surpassed 10% of measured desktop web usage in North America according to Statcounter, not necessarily 10% of the region's installed desktop computer base."

The Hill published the thoughts of Gleb Tsipursky, Ph.D., who serves as the CEO of the future-of-work consultancy Disaster Avoidance Experts: A recent EnhancV survey of 1,000 full-time U.S. workers subject to new or stricter return-to-office policies found that 72% suspect these mandates are really a voluntary attrition strategy — a strategy by their own employers to make them quit their jobs. A full 46% admit to the practice of coffee-badging. Thirty-six percent have applied for a new job while sitting at their current office desk. Thirty-six percent have started a side hustle since the mandate was announced, in anticipation of being let go or quitting. Those numbers do not prove that employees reject collaboration. They show that many employees no longer trust the official story... The central mistake in many in-office mandates is the assumption that proximity automatically produces commitment. It does not. A worker who spends two hours commuting to sit on video calls with colleagues in other cities is not experiencing culture. That worker is experiencing theater. When executives describe the office as a cure-all, many employees experience lost time, higher costs and lower autonomy. The policy's defining feature becomes its credibility gap. Research keeps undercutting the belief that more office time automatically means better performance. A University of Pittsburgh analysis of S&P 500 firms found that return-to-office mandates reduced employee satisfaction without improving firm performance or firm value.... Baylor University's reporting on office mandates and brain drain found that firms with mandates faced greater turnover among women, senior employees, managers and high-skilled workers, while job vacancy duration increased and hiring rates declined. In other words, the people with the most options are often the first to leave. The employees who remain may not be the most committed — they may simply be the least mobile... Attendance can be mandated, but commitment cannot. When leaders confuse the two, they do not rebuild workplace culture. They create a room full of people planning their exit.

New York has finalized new rules that will govern social media apps in the state starting on January 25, 2027. The law prohibits social media platforms from sending notifications to minors between midnight and 6 a.m. without parental consent. And minors "will only be shown content from other accounts they follow or otherwise select in a set sequence, such as chronological order," rather than "the default algorithmically personalized feeds... unless they get parental consent for an addictive feed." (Social media companies "must offer at least one alternative method for age assurance besides providing a government-issued ID," the announcements points out, and any information used to determine age "must not be used for any other purpose and must be deleted or de-identified immediately after its intended use.") But meanwhile, the EFF writes that a committee in the U.S. Senate is considering the SCREEN ACT, "a sweeping age-verification bill that would require online services to verify users' ages before they can access any sexually explicit content. If this bill passes, it will force millions of adult internet users to give up their anonymity, privacy, and security before they access lawful speech." Unlike many state-age verification laws — which have been harmful in their own right — the SCREEN Act has no requirement that a significant portion of the website consist of sexually explicit content that is harmful to minors. The bill requires nearly any service hosting even a single piece of sexually explicit content to verify the ages of its users. The result is that the bill would apply not only to adult content sites like PornHub or OnlyFans, but also streaming services like Netflix, and social media platforms like Reddit, Discord, or Bluesky, if they host any adult content... Under the SCREEN Act, the "bouncer" will be a digital age-verification service that captures your personal information and saves it to a database for an unspecified amount of time. The consequences of the bill won't be limited to minors. If websites and apps are expected to reliably identify teenagers, adults will be asked to prove they are adults. Even worse, the SCREEN Act is a privacy and data security nightmare. One provision of the bill requires services to take reasonable steps to protect the data collected and to not maintain for longer than is necessary. But these are terribly weak protections that impose no meaningful collection, use, or retention limits on services collecting people's private information... The SCREEN Act also targets virtual private network (VPN) users and providers. The bill requires covered websites to verify users' ages based on their IP addresses unless the service can determine that the user is outside the United States, and specifically requires age verification on traffic coming from known VPN addresses. In practice, this discourages the use of VPNs and proxy servers, which millions of people rely on for legitimate purposes such as protecting personal privacy, securing public Wi-Fi connections, safeguarding journalists and activists, and preventing data tracking... The SCREEN Act creates onerous age-verification rules that will block adults from accessing lawful speech, curtail their ability to be anonymous, and jeopardize the data security and privacy of all internet users.

CNN tells the unfortunate tale of hedge fund Situational Awareness, "founded in 2024 by German-born Leopold Aschenbrenner when he was in his early 20s." Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI employee, founded the hedge fund on the premise that "AI will be the dominant driver of global market returns over the next decade," according to the firm's site... Aschenbrenner managed to turn hundreds of millions of dollars into tens of billions of dollars over the course of roughly two years... That streak ended on Thursday, though, when the fund was forced to sell the bulk of its public holdings to a bigger rival after many of its investments went south. But that's only part of the story. The fund employed a risky strategy of borrowing money to purchase stocks. When the investments appreciate, the payoff can be massive. But when the investments sour, the losses can be catastrophic. The downturn in AI stocks over the course of this month, like chip makers and cloud computing providers, hit the hedge fund extra hard. It was forced to sell off many investments at a steep discount to rival hedge fund Citadel in what Aschenbrenner reportedly compared to a "bank run" in a letter to investors. "Critics pointed out that Aschenbrenner had no experience running money prior to launching his fund in July 2024, calling him more lucky than smart," writes CNBC: Some noted that his early work experience was at the doomed crypto firm FTX, where he helped now-disgraced founder Sam Bankman-Fried run a charity out of a Bahamas penthouse. Others on Wall Street, including former traders at global investment banks, noted that in light of reports Situational Awareness used as much as 400% leverage, the collapse wasn't shocking. The Wall Street Journal reports that Situational Awareness "also used options to amplify its returns. That meant that even small declines in individual names could have big impacts on Situational's portfolio." And so, as the New York Post put it, "The celebrated crystal ball of the 'Nostradamus of AI' hasn't merely gone cloudy — it has rolled off the table and shattered on the parlor floor." Wall Street breathed a huge sigh of relief last week as an AI-focused hedge fund called Situational Awareness reportedly sold most of its portfolio — reportedly down 67% last month on the backfiring of debt-fueled bets on chipmakers and assorted artificial-intelligence firms — to billionaire Ken Griffin's Citadel... The prevailing sentiment was best summed up by a veteran Wall Street sage who has seen a lot of flameouts in his day. Let's just say he wasn't impressed by Leopold Aschenbrenner, the 25-year-old German-born "Nostradamus" figure who is the founder of Situational Awareness... "Just your typical leveraged idiot who was right until he was wrong," the source said, adding that the implosion is a "one-off...." [Another trusted source] felt there was room for conversation: "A significant issue. Not viewed as systemic right now. I wonder if that changes as more problems arise." Indeed, the fact is that most of Wall Street is closely monitoring the Situational Awareness situation because they were holding many of the same positions as Aschenbrenner. Another top hedge fund manager I won't name tells me he has been getting crushed on similar investments in chipmakers essential to the AI supply chain, as well as other companies feeding off this technology. "A hardware wallet is supposed to be the safest place to keep Bitcoin," writes The Street, since it never connects to the internet, its keys never leave the device, and "the whole point is that an attacker would need to physically hold it to steal anything." The problem is that anyone who can reproduce the recovery seed doesn't need to possess the COLDCARD, Nerds.xyz points out. More from The Street: [The recovery seed] is supposed to come from a hardware random number generator producing 128 bits of entropy, a number so large that guessing it is computationally impossible. It wasn't. According to Block's engineering team a single code change on March 1, 2021 caused the firmware to silently fall back to a software-based generator instead of the hardware one. On Mk3 devices the effective search space collapsed to roughly 40 bits. Coinkite has confirmed that figure and called it preliminary. The gap between 128 bits and 40 bits is not a matter of degree. It is the difference between a lock that cannot be picked and one that can be brute-forced by anyone with rented cloud computing.... Chainalysis found the attacker went after the largest balances first, pulling more than $30 million in the opening ten minutes. Within about 25 minutes, roughly 594 BTC had moved out of some 500 single-signature wallets. One victim lost around $1.8 million... Coinkite has shipped fixed firmware, but with a warning that matters more than the patch itself. Updating does not repair an existing seed. A seed created with weak entropy stays weak forever. Affected users have to generate an entirely new wallet on updated hardware and move their coins to it. By Saturday morning Galaxy research was tracking 1,158.66 BTC, worth roughly $75.1 million, taken from 2,673 addresses, according to the article. And "The Coldcard exploit is ONGOING," Galaxy Research posted an hour ago on X.com. "Move Coldcard single-sig funds to safe locations immediately!" We have reported ~600 addresses we believe to be hackers holding funds stolen from Coldcard-generated weak entropy addresses to federal investigators, industry compliance firms, and cross-industry cyber investigators. The Washington Post looks at giant tech companies "feeding every available dollar into the cash-incinerating maw of AI machines." They warn "Tech superstars that once had oodles of cash left over at the end of each year are now flipping into the red..." [While optimists expect] huge corporate profits and a society-wide boost to wealth and well-being... questions about that AI vision are now growing more urgent: When, if ever, will this payoff arrive? And what will the fallout be for Americans if the titanic investment doesn't quickly deliver? "This AI thing better work out because if it doesn't ... we're going to have a problem," said Torsten Slok, chief economist at investment firm Apollo Global Management. AI costs and doubts are spreading. The U.S. stock market has swooned this summer over fear of the AI bubble going bust... The AI gamble sweeping up American fortunes is led by tech companies splurging on hulking data centers packed with computer chips and equipment needed to develop sophisticated AI models and deliver them to customers. In investor calls in the past week, Google, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon pointed to soaring AI-related sales and business deals. Advertisers are using the technology to tailor marketing pitches and corporations and start-ups are buying access to chatbots and other AI software to boost productivity... But this spending can only continue if AI generates an even larger avalanche of new revenue to pay for it all. Financial results released over the past week show that the AI titans' mammoth costs are largely swamping the sales boost from the technology. At Google, for every dollar of cash its business generated in the past three months, $1.15 went out the door to pay for AI computer chips and equipment, land for AI data centers and other big-ticket purchases. The company is covering the difference partly by borrowing money and selling more of its stock. Next year, five leading AI companies — Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Oracle — are projected to have negative free cash flow, which measures the cash left over after paying expenses and AI infrastructure costs. The figures, based on investment analyst projections compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence, show a stunning reversal for what have been some of the world's most cash-generating corporations... The companies remain profitable by standard financial accounting measures that spread out the costs of their AI infrastructure spending over many years... Pessimists see a bet so gargantuan that it cannot possibly pay off. The pessimists are growing louder. The Bank for International Settlements, a typically measured institution in Switzerland that advises government bankers around the world, recently warned there was risk of "economy-wide recessions" if the AI boom falters. That could mean pain for workers and communities across the United States. "I'm not saying AI is going to go away, it's just not clear to me these guys are going to make money on it," said Christopher Wood, global head of equity strategy at investment bank Jefferies who has correctly predictedpast financial bubbles.

NASA's Curiosity rover has sent back images of honeycomb-like textures called polygonal fractures, each one about 1.5 to 3 inches (4 to 8 centimeters) across. NASA reports: The mission has spotted small patches of these geometric shapes several times before, but nothing at the scale discovered in Valle Grande. In a 360-degree panorama that the rover captured on June 19 and 20, the 4,930th and 4,931st Martian days, or sols, of the mission, the polygonal shapes spread in all directions for as far as the rover can see... "[T]his sea of polygons took our breath away," said the mission's project scientist, Ashwin Vasavada of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California... Some of the polygons that the mission has spotted in the past clearly formed as mud cracks, though a variety of processes can contribute to their honeycomb textures, including cycles of warm and cold temperatures or compression that squeezed water out of the sediment when the surface was buried. These newly discovered polygons are among the many surprises Curiosity has trundled across since landing on Mars 14 years ago, on Aug. 5, 2012. Besides sulfur crystals, shiny meteorites, and other interesting geologic features, the rover has made major discoveries about the ancient Martian environment — most importantly, that it had the water, chemistry, and nutrients to support microbial life. Billions of years ago, lakes and streams dappled the lower foothills of Mount Sharp, a 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) mountain that Curiosity has been ascending since 2014. The rover has previously uncovered chemistry left over from Mars' watery history, including carbon-based molecules believed to be precursors to RNA and DNA, two nucleic acids that carry genetic information. Scientists have no way of knowing whether these organic molecules were created by biologic or geologic processes — either path is possible — but their discovery reconfirmed that ancient Mars had the right chemistry to support life. Dark, pebble-sized rocks also litter the area, NASA writes in a blog post, saying it's a "still-to-be-resolved question" as to whether they're bits of Mars that "floated" down from higher in the sediment layers, or "were ejected from distant impacts outside of Gale crater, or are meteorites from beyond Mars altogether."

Apple's stock "fell just shy of 10% on Friday," reports Yahoo Finance, "after CEO Tim Cook warned about the impact of the global memory shortage on the company's business." During Apple's third quarter earnings call, Cook said the company paid significantly more for memory in the quarter and expects that to further increase in the current period. And while Apple is able to offset some of that price jump, it won't be able to tackle it all... The CEO said that iPhone and Mac sales outpaced Apple's own expectations and that a lack of flexibility in the supply chain is making it more difficult to keep up with demand. Yahoo Finance cited an investment analyst who predicts overall gross margins for Apple's iPhone could drop from 38% to 34.5%. But another analyst sees a scenario where Apple "raises iPhone prices, unit growth will slow, and as unit growth slows, so will user growth, which we think ultimately will slow Services growth." (Still, Yahoo Finance predicts Apple's new leasing program "could help address those concerns.") Apple has another controversial option, according to the blog 9to5Mac: Bloomberg reports that US senators from both sides of the aisle are urging Apple CEO Tim Cook to commit by August 21 to not using memory chips from Chinese suppliers CXMT and YMTC.... Apple is not required to obtain U.S. government approval to purchase chips from the companies, but doing so without the administration's support could expose it to significant political ramifications. Which is why, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal ahead of Apple's recent price hikes, Tim Cook said that "everything needs to be on the table," adding that "we should look at all supply...." More recently, the Journal reported that Apple's use of Chinese memory chips could extend beyond China, with the company seeking the administration's blessing to use components from CXMT and YMTC in products sold elsewhere outside the US. The report also detailed Micron's efforts to persuade the administration to reject Apple's request, arguing that allowing Chinese suppliers into Apple's supply chain could undermine domestic memory production... [Bloomberg's reported that U.S. lawmakers warned] other companies could follow Apple's lead, potentially undermining domestic memory production and planned investments in states such as Indiana, Idaho, New York, and Virginia... [T]he senators sought details about any information Apple has shared with CXMT during the component qualification process, noting that the transfer of controlled technical information to advanced chipmaking facilities in China may require a Commerce Department license. The blog MacRumors notes that Apple has already increased prices for Macs and iPads in June because of surging memory prices. Apple CEO Tim Cook said Thursday "we did it because we're in what I would characterize as a 100-year flood on memory pricing with exponential increases in memory prices." Cook did not comment on whether Apple plans to raise iPhone prices when the iPhone 18 Pro models and first foldable launch this September, but multiple analysts believe prices will go up. Cook said Apple is expecting to pay higher memory costs in the September quarter, though Apple will be able to partially offset it with lower costs on some non-memory components and a stockpile of inventory. Sky News points out that "It was Tim Cook's final earnings appearance before his retirement after 15 years at the helm of the company." Apple, which recently topped Nvidia as the most valuable listed company, has been largely spared the volatility in share price seen by chipmakers and big spenders on artificial intelligence. Apple continues to generate cash without the huge investment spending that its Wall St peers are dealing with "and that showed across most parts of the operation," said Thomas Monteiro, an analyst at Investing.com.
